Casting

Most spells cost an action

Bonus action spells are quick

Some spells can be cast as Reactions, these are in addition to your turn actions.

Targeting

Creatures might not know they're a target

You must usually be able to see your target

Example: Action Surge Spellcasting

This can be confusing, as a fighter/wizard one example you might consider is:

Similarly, as a fighter/druid you could also cast multiple cantrips:

Example: Sorcerer's Quickened Spell

Another example is the Sorcerer's spending of two sorcery points to cast an action spell as a bonus action, this doesn't ignore the above rule (whereby any spell cast as a bonus action, limits your action to a cantrip only,) but it does mean you can potentially also attack with a mêlée weapon.

Rituals

Some spells have a ritual tag

Can be cast normally or ritual cast

The Spellcaster must have the ability to ritual cast (usually a feature)

The spell must be prepared or specified otherwise, or on the list of known spells for the character.
