Most spells cost an action
-
If you cast a spell with an action, you can cast another spell with
something like Action Surge (granting you an additional action.)
Bonus action spells are quick
-
If you cast any spell as a bonus action, you're limited only to cantrips for
your main action
-
This includes any additional actions (Action Surge) you might have
-
If you cast a cantrip as your bonus action, you can cast a cantrip as your
main action
Some spells can be cast as Reactions, these are in addition to your turn
actions.
Creatures might not know they're a target
You must usually be able to see your target
This can be confusing, as a fighter/wizard one example you might consider is:
-
Cast Fireball with an action
-
Use Second Wind to regain some health as your bonus action
-
Use Action Surge (free action)
-
Cast Fireball again
Similarly, as a fighter/druid you could also cast multiple cantrips:
-
Cast Shillelagh as a bonus action
-
Cast Thorn Whip as an action
-
Use Action Surge (free action)
-
Cast Thorn Whip again, as your action
Another example is the Sorcerer's spending of two sorcery points to cast an
action spell as a bonus action, this doesn't ignore the above rule (whereby
any spell cast as a bonus action, limits your action to a cantrip only,) but
it does mean you can potentially also attack with a mêlée weapon.
Some spells have a ritual tag
Can be cast normally or ritual cast
-
Takes 10 minutes longer than normal to cast
-
Doesn't expend a spell slot
-
You can't ritual cast at a higher spell slot level than designated
The Spellcaster must have the ability to ritual cast (usually a feature)
The spell must be prepared or specified otherwise, or on the list of known
spells for the character.
-
Unless the ritual feature specifies otherwise, e.g. the Wizard just needs to
have the spell in their spellbook, not prepared
